The road to Glitterheim, Norway

Glitterheim is the name of a trekking cabin in the end of the valley of Veodalen and was built in 1901, and it’s owned by The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). The cabin is located at the foot of Norway’s second tallest mountain, Glittertind.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, we were not allowed to enter the area close to the cabin as we haven’t booked a visit in before hand. Anyway, the view along the way was amazing, enjoy.

Sognefjellet in white

We have been crossing Sognefjellet several times, but never when it has been all covered in snow. The road over the mountain pass is more than 1400 meters high and are closed during winter. The road opened the weekend before Easter this year, and we used the opportunity to take a look, and to take some photos to share with you all. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Picos de Europa, Spain – Part I

The Peaks of Europe are a mountain range in Spain, situated at the junction between Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León, and are part of the larger Cantabrian Range stretching along northern part of the country from the Pyrenees in the east. If you happens to like mountainous landscape, you will be in heaven. Deep v-shaped valleys and steep mountainsides compete with each other for you attention. In between houses and villages appear, some abandoned many years or even centuries ago, in the most unexpected places.  Where there are some green patches you will see cows and sheep grassing, and if you look closer, you will see some goats in the steeper parts.

Andorra, our impressions, part II

Since we had a wonderful time in Andorra and took a lot of photos, here goes another random collection of this magnificent microstate in the Pyrenees.

If you like sports, adventure and nature, this is a place you may want to visit. Andorra promotes and supports the use of bikes and has many ski slopes. It has also some natural parks where you can have different activities and beautiful mountains where you can hike.

Andorra, our impressions, part I

Andorra is a microstate in the Pyrenees between France and Spain and has a beautiful alpine landscape. From our road trip in Northern Spain we visited Andorra and stayed for three nights before we continued our journey back to Spain (all the way to Finisterra).

If you happen to be en the area of the Northeast coast, we highly recommend to go to Andorra, as its an amazing place with high, steep mountains and long deep valleys. If get off the main motorways you will find winding roads going over the mountain from one valley to another, giving astonishing views along the way. Its nature and landscapes reminded us of some parts of Norway, country in which we reside.

Ilhabela, Brazil

Officially named Ilha de São Sebastião (St. Sebastian Island), but commonly just called Ilhabela, the “Beautiful Island”, just outside the coast of São Paulo state. A short fifteen-minute boat or ferry trip brings you to the relatively small island with a population of about 32 000, witch during holiday season quadruples. For most people that comes to Ilhabela do it for the beaches, sailing and surfing, there is also a lot of hiking trails in the mountains where seven tops reaches above 1000 meters

Ilhabela also has a history of being a hiding place of pirates and privateers, and has the largest graveyard of shipwrecks in whole Brazil, making it a paradise for scuba divers. We visited the island about ten years ago.

Autumn over Tyin, Norway

Tyin is a lake at slightly above 1000 meters over sea level in Oppland county in Norway. The lake and the area is a part of Jotunheimen National Park. We where there in the middle of September as a part of our road trip.

West Cape (Vestkapp), Norway

With almost 500 meters above sea level you can see down to one of the most treacherous stretches for seafarers along the Norwegian coast. The weather can turn in the blink of an eye, making this idyllic scenery to a nightmare of strong current and gale wind. Many ships have ended their journey in these waters.

The spectacular panoramic view from West Cape might lead you to believe its the western most place in Norway, witch its not (its Vardetangen close to Bergen by the way).

Einunndalen, Norway

I guess it’s about time that we make a post about our Header Image for our blog. Here are the photo itself along with more from the same area called Einunndalen in Norway. Probably not the most visited place by foreign tourist, but quite known by Norwegians who like mountainous landscape above the tree line. Now, you don’t have to be high above the sea level to be over the tree line in Norway though, just about 500 meters depending on the area and less in the north.

Trollstigen (Trolls’ Path), Norway

Trollstigen is maybe the most iconic tourist road in Norway. Closed when the first snow falls and only reopens sometimes during May after about three weeks of removing snow over the mountain pass.

The road is partly very narrow and cars can’t pass one another everywhere. Buses are limited to 12,5 meters to be able to make the sharpest hairpins. If you are afraid of heights, this may not be the place for you.
